A word from the Ambassador of Switzerland
On 7 June 1934, the Swiss Federal Council and His Majesty Fouad I, King of Egypt, concluded a Treaty of Friendship between Switzerland and Egypt asserting “perpetual peace and unalterable friendship” between the two countries and its peoples. The parties also declared their intention to further develop the relations between the two nations. In March 1935, Switzerland opened its first diplomatic representation in Cairo. From June 2024 until March 2025, the Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt marks the 90-years anniversary with a series of activities. We plan to revisit the traces of the Swiss-Egyptian friendship, some more recent and some going back hundreds of years. We will also explore the expanding scope of relations between both countries. Come join us on this journey, commemorating the friendship between the two peoples!
The last remaining Wonder of the Ancient World stands next to the most famous Swiss mountain. While the Great Pyramids of Giza are man-made, the Matterhorn is a natural creation. Both symbolize eternity and the enduring friendship between the Egyptian and Swiss people. They stand firmly, beyond time, witness to the numerous stories of generations of travelers along the way. We thank the Swiss artist, Carole Isler, for her drawing of the iconic peaks (below).
The story behind the logo
Since the arrival of the first Egyptians at the foot of the Alps and the first Swiss at the Pyramids, hundreds of years ago, the relations between the two people grew and diversified over time.
Until today, Egypt remains a crucial partner for Switzerland: Egypt is the largest trade market on the African continent. Around 100 Swiss companies or agents established in Egypt provide thousands of jobs. More and more, Swiss companies produce locally in Egypt and export from here to all corners of the world. Swiss investments rank among the top 10 in Egypt.
For 45 years, Switzerland has been working with Egypt on social and economic development, based on mutual trust and respect. The partnership ranges from projects on green growth, water and waste management to supporting small and medium enterprises and women entrepreneurs.
The friendship between the Egyptian and Swiss communities extends to a lively and rich exchange in culture, arts and science. Today, around 2400 Egyptians live in Switzerland, while over 1100 Swiss are based in Egypt.
Egypt, with its natural beauty and its cultural and historic attractions, also ranks among the favorite travel destinations of Swiss tourists, further enhancing the people-to-people ties between our countries.
